[Seeks a procedure to] replace a nuetral safety switch on a 1994 OMC side mount remote throttle and shift in which only the throttle and shift lever is exposed and the actual box is located behind the side panel. Thanks, John.

I do not have the side mounting controls, however, on the top mounting controls the first step in the disassembly is to remove the throttle and shift handle. This is done by prying off a decorative circular metallic cover which covers a recess in the lever and is retained by a weak adhesive. Once this decorative panel is removed you have access to a retaining fastener. When this fastener is removed, the shift and throttle handle can be removed from the splined shaft.

I hope this description may be of some value to you.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping someone had replaced the neutral safety switch and could tell me what is involved. Any ideas???

You should be able to use the website to obtain a nice assembly drawing of the control box. This will show you how it is assembled, and, perhaps, how to disassemble it.

The neutral safety switch is--if my recollection is good--a small electrical micro switch which is mechanically operated by the shift lever.

Go here to start:

Click on the link on the right for LITERATURE.

This will take you to:

Click on the link for "Find Evinrude Engine Diagrams"

Follow the directions and navigate to a drawing of your controls. It is a beautiful resource for owners of older OMC motors. How very nice of Bombardier to make this literature available to us on-line!

I think this is what you are looking for:

[Oops--I could not point to the individual diagram because the URI contained session information which has expired--Sorry.]

I think you want the "Concealed Side Mount Controls" drawing.
