How long should a water pump last with normal use on this motor? While out on a test run on a montauk before buying the water pump went. The owner said the water pump should be replaced every few years. Is this normal or is something fishy?

Hard cores replace them every year. I have 92 40 Yamaha and previous owner didn't replace it, he had it for awhile, I've had it a couple of years and have not replaced it - strong stream from tell tale - I have brand new impeller and gaskets right here on my desk for the last month or so. Plan to replace it when I get a minute.

I think it depends on how it's used and conditions. I say replace every couple or three years if you depend on your motor for reliability.
