I have a 1994 Evinrude 40 without electric tilt/trim. However, it does have some sort of hydraulic device on it that makes the manual raising and lowering a bit easier. It seems that it may be out of fluid because it has become very diffficult to move up or down. Sometimes almost impossible.

Does it need more fluid? If so, how do I put the fluid in? It doesn't seem to have any type of nipples, but it does look like there is a way to twist off the top casing that the rod slips through.

Any thoughts?

Nope...no way....no how...can't happen...and mostly DANGEROUS. That is a closed system and it is UNDER EXTREME PRESSURE so do not mess with it. They are also about $400. You can't remove it beause then you will not have an engine lock for reverse. "What CAN I do?" you ask? Luckily I went thrugh this last year with same year and hp engine. Either find a used one(good luck) or buy a CMC PT130 power tilt & trim unit or about $450 new and mount it where engine was mounted. Then mount engine ALL the way up on unit and install a nice 17" pitch SS prop. Now you have a slightly heavy but potent setup that will open your eyes to the scare factor a 40hp can do only with PTnT....enjoy.
