I came across a 1993 Mercury 20 Horsepower Mercury with a 20" shaft, an was wondering if it would work on my 11' whaler sport. The only issues I could think of would have to do with increased drag and shallow water operation. Would there be any other issues I should be aware of? The motor itself is in great condition.

You will need to build or creat a jackplate that increases the height of the engine. A 20' shaft engine on a 15' transom will create a lot of problems. The extra drag will slow you down. It will also affect the trim of the boat, usually actually causing it to go bow-down, which I know is somewhat counter-intuitive, but that's the way it seems to work. But most importantly, it will create a tremendous amount of spray off the back of the boat. It will look like you're riding in a very slow hydroplane.

It will put a lOT of stress on your transom, get a jackplate either fixed($80) or manual adjustable($150) and use it. Actually it is kinda better because it keeps the engine from getting drenched when you come off plane.
