I am working on my 1987 Johnson 25-HP. After a good cleaning I found oil leakage from the prop shaft oil retainer. I am trying to remove the bearing housing with a specific tool (after removed the screws inside) but I find that is very hard to extract it and don't want to damage anything. I have tried to warm up the gearcase with an hot-air gun and freeze the shaft with a freezer spray, but seem impossible to move the housing. Have you any advice?

On a bench I have seen an experienced mechanic use a torch to heat the gearcase in an effort to free up the bearing retainer. I wouldn't try it myself. |

You don't need to remove the bearing carrier to replace the prop shaft seals. You can remove both seals easily by CAREFULLY using a pick (awl) to pierce the seal bodies and pry them out. Just did that on my 25, saved me a bunch of time. |
