have just brought home a late 60's early 70's 13 ft whaler. Previous owner painted interior and added "sand" to the paint as his nonskid. However, he did not stop with sole; nonskid covers the entire inside of the boat (forward locker included). Trying to figure out best way to remove this unfriendly grit. Suggestions appreciated. Heading out now to put a palm sander on one section and see what happens. Don't have breathing gear yet so this will be small test section. What color blue can I expect to see from original paint??? Robin egg blue?? thanks hank

Congrats for your choice, a 13' is a wonderful and easy boat!

I would try to soften a small area of the forward locker by a chemical paint remover and see what happens... I ain't saying that the gelcoat underside still shines, but before you put a sander on it you'd better try...

Cheers
Fabio

p.s.
Chemical removers are harmful for your eyes, skin and lungs: wear adequate protections and act carefully.

fabio... good advice re: chemical striper. Bought a bucket of Smart Strip and tested it on the forward locker. works fine but is a real mess; I'm not in a location where I can "flush" water through the boat for cleanup so will have to use denatured alcohol for that step. Gelcoat underneath still looks pretty good. thanks for the help... hank

Hank,

when the paint layer has been completely removed, the tacky remains of the striper will dry out and are easily removed by a (dry) light sanding+buffing. This is based on my experience, of course, YMMV.

Ciao
