I'm thinking about adding trim tabs to my 170. Thats before I realized how am I going to get to the wires behind the port side of the boat. The starboard side should not be a big deal, their is an access panel there. Any ideas?

Email from Chuck @ BWWhere this boat isn't really designed for trim tabs, it is difficult to run wires from the port side as the area under the port/aft step is foam filled. Whaler would not recommend installing an access cover and digging out any foam as this would void the hull warranty and could cause structural damage. Wiring would have to be run outside of the hull and routed up and over the transom to run with the rest of the rigging from the engine to the console.

I know Chuck means well, and he has BW's best interest at heart, but I seriously doubt that a small removal of foam will void the hull warranty or compromise the structural integrity of the boat. Tabs are a wonderful addition, as they not only allow the operator the ability to give the boat the best attitude, but they also effectively make the boat larger, as they provide increased hull surface area. Take a real close look on the port side and see if a 1/4" hole through all that foam can get your wires where they need to be. Lenco sells their new kits with unpinned Deutch connector ends (you get the connectors with the kits, just pin them after the wires are run), so all you need is a is a coat hanger to pull them through. The point is, if Whaler has a lifetime warranty on the hull, which means you can't add certain boating accessories that make a boat perform better, what's the point? Just some food for thought. |

Chuck works for Boston Whaler and has for many years. If anyone knows what will void the 10 year warranty on the hull, he would. My suggestion to Feejer is to stop planning projects like it's late December and start USING that boat before the season out. Just my unwanted 2 cents. -Seth |
