We just bought and are refirbishing our 1972 Outrage 21ft. We can't decide whether to put a 175 or 200HP engine. Any thoughts?

Mosta re happy with a 150 and more is just excessive. Remember it is a 1972 so depending on condition you might not want to stress it out anymore than you need. With a 115 she will do about 40, with a 150 it will do low 50's. with a 250 it will do upper 50's...get my point.

I have the same boat (a 1971), and I agree that 150hp is plenty on this hull. It is very easy to plane this hull, a 115 is probably enough for most people. I repowered with a 150 Suzuki 4 stroke and if money were no object I would not put any more power on the boat. These are great boats, fast, fuel efficient, stable and tough, but they will ride rough in almost any chop if you are going over 35 mph.

I would avoid the weight of a huge motor, especially if you are thinking of repowering with a 4 stroke. In general this hull handles weight in the stern well from a performance standpoint, but if your boat has gained any water weight over the years, the combination of a heavy motor and gas tanks in the stern could make your rub rail sit below the water at rest in the stern. This isn't a problem with mine, but I have seen some (especially with twins or a big v6 motor) where that is the case. If the rub rail were below the waterline at rest, the boat will still perform fine but it will look odd. In any case, one of the great things about the boat is how it will jump on plane and stay on plane at low speeds...a lighter motor will emphasise these traits, and you likely won't miss the horsepower of a giant outboard on this hull.

If you're talking about a two stroke motor, either an older one or a new direct injection model (Merc Optimax, Evinrude E-tec), then a 200hp motor will just be more than needed. But I think a 200hp, v6 four stroke might prevent this boat from staying on plane at low speeds...I wouldn't reccommend it.

I am thrilled with the (4 cylinder, @450lb) Suzuki DF150 four stroke on mine, it is a 50mph boat if propped for speed with that motor. I think a 115-140 would be fine for my uses. If you are a speed demon, the Suzuki DF175 is the same block & weight as the 150. Others here have been happy with repowers using (4 cylinder) Yamaha or Honda 150 4 strokes, the Evinrude Etec 150, or Merc Optimax 135-175.

FYI, the boat was most often sold when new with a single 85 to 115hp, or twin Bearcat 55hp...all of those were powerhead rated & not as powerful as a new motor of the same horsepower.

Sorry for the long post, hope this helps.
