I have a 40hp Johnson outboard ser#J270251
The motors model # is gone and I need to get parts for it.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Got a pic? What parts do you need? Is it the 2cyl model that is pretty modern with a through hub exhaust or the pre 1977 models with the old key way style prop? You van also look at the freeze plug thingies on the engine(usually silver but sometimes the engine color). They usually have the date on them. If you think it is a 1987 and you see 86 in that number then it is an 86. The newer style 40's were from 1984-200?

I believe it is around a 1970 model. It is a two cylinder and the chrome plug on top of the motor is where I got the ser. #.

If it has one carburetor, it is the old style 40 last made in the mid '70's whose lineage goes back to the early '50's.

If it has 2 carburetors, it is from the '80's or newer with the looper block.
