I recently purchased a used, 96 Dauntless. The boat steers just fine, the tilt tube is greased.

When pulling a skier or maneuvering under high power, when turning the wheel, sometimes I hear a clicking sound coming from the console where the steering gear is.

I have a teleflex system.

My guess -- is that the teleflex system has a rack and pinion gear behind the steering wheel and this noise is from the teeth skipping.

The boat has low low hours for a 96.

Any ideas on this? The engine turns freely and easily at the dock.

Except for the noise, there does not appear to be any reduction in turning capabilities.

thanks!

backfeed pressure to the helm ? making it creak ? can you feel anything in the wheel ?

no -just the snapping sound/clicking sound that occurs sometimes. Steering appears normal except for this.

i would think you could feel the gear slip through your hands on the wheel even if you were at the last tooth on the cable,,if that is what it is ,, what do you have hanging under there that could be affected by high torque pulling or turns ,,clicking like tapping in a steady rhythm or asymmetrical but in time with the chines grip and slip,,
