Two weeks ago, my 1985 70hp Johnson started making a squealing noise when activating the starter. The motor starts fine (squealing stops as soon as I stop cranking the motor) and the starter is turning as fast as usual (battery is fine, etc...). I might add that it is a LOUD squeal. Is my starter going bad or do I have another problem? Would like to fix it as I am thinking of selling it (1986 15' Whaler Striper) and the boat is mint except for this issue.

Probably top bushing in the starter. Try a light shot of spray grease or marine lubricant under the starter drive. Be sure not to get any into the drive itself, you need to shoot for where the starter shaft goes through the top plate of the starter.

Thanks Martino. The starter was just a little loose. Retightened and all is well. I should have looked before posting....
