I have a 1976 Johnson 85-HP V4 motor. The tilt and trim just stopped working. I checked the hydraulic fluid; it is fine. What else should I do?

Check a voltmeter and test for resistance at the solenoid on the powerhead. A failed solenoid is the likely culprit.

Do you have a service manual for the engine?

I bought one but it doesn't say or describe my tilt and trim motor right. Could the motor be older then the serial number and stuff on the transom mount?

Before you do anything else, give the trim motor 3 good taps with a hammer. If that doesn't work, then you can start troubleshooting with a meter.

To troubleshoot, trace the wiring back up from the pump until you find a connector. Test for good voltage between each of the pump wires and a common ground while you hit the trim switch. If you have power to the connector, then the trim pump is likely shot. Whack it again with the hammer to make sure.

If you don't have power at the connector, then move up stream to the relay/solinoid, etc.

Trust me on the hammer tap thing. It could save you an hour or two tracing the wiring. I recently learned the hard way.

haha ok, if it is the electrical motor what is the OEM number on it, I'm pretty sure it's a Prestolite but not sure of the number.

Just helped a friend change one today on a 2001 225 Evinrude, Friend stated he paid $180 for it from the dealer.

[I] called the only dealer in my town and they said they couldn't order one, it was [too] old, whatever that means [I] think there [mistaken] but whatever [I] can order one [I] just need to know the model number and a good site to order it from

First, see if your motor looks like one of these:
http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_search_results.aspx

Then, go here:
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/arco.html .

Arco is an excellent replacement motor, if all of your troubleshooting has not led you to a fix. Once you know what you are looking for, then try eBay or craigslist. Good luck.

God, where did that come from? Different post. Try this:

Then go to the Arco site. Sorry about that.

Yeah [I am] pretty sure the motor is burned up do [I] need to order a completely new one or can [I] just order like the armature or like the frame and field thing from the Johnson site[?]

Does this look like your motor?

$185 at Maxrules. I would get the new pump, unless the guts are a whole lot cheaper. $185 for a new pump is a good price!

The trim and tilt system is an electro-hydraulic system. There are many electrical components involved. Give the electrical portion of the system a careful check.

Generally the OMC service manuals will contain detailed information on making repairs and rebuilding the trim system. The include detailed descriptions of the hydraulic system and its many components.

I have the service manual for my 1975 OMC Tilt & Trim (kit # 172859) on a 85hp Johnson. Could copy and send to you. The manual basicaly says to check continuity at battery, check cable plug conections, check motor for shorts, check for broken wires, check solenoid, chec fuse and circuit breaker, change motor. When the same thing happened to me I took the top off thr motor and sprayed some solvent in, replaced the fluid, fully charged the battery, and hit a few time with a rubber hammer. It started working.

This is the motor needed to Run the tilt trim on a 1976 v-4 OMC.

http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/pc/ARC6208/OB-OMC3/Trim+Pump%2C+OMC%2C+ Johnson%2C+Evinrude%2C+3-wire

However,

Before buying a motor I would purchase a new trim solenoid. I would be that is the problem unless these is a short elsewhere. You can get a solenoid from most any West Marine stores or from a OMC / BRP dealer for $20.

There you go...you can also order the solenoid on the same page I just listed for $15 (look to the bottom of the page).

Did you tap the motor with a hammer yet? It would be worth the 20 seconds of your time before you stroke a check for a new motor.
gnr posted 08-25-2008 01:06 PM ET (US)     Profile for gnr
You can check the motor by jumping it straight to the battery. Trace the two wires from the motor to the connector. Run jumper wires from these wires to the battery, polarity doesn't matter. If you get nothing then it's safe to say the motor is cooked. If the outboard raises/lowers then you know the motor is good and your problem is in the switch, the circuit or the relays.

The tap with the hammer trick has got me going a couple times in the past.

The one at max rules doesnt really look like mine, mine only has two screws to hold it and that one has three, Thanks for all the tips, I tried to jump it and it still didnt, I also replaced the soleniod and hit the motor with a hammer a few times and it still doesnt work
