Hello, I'm new at this and not too proud to be ignorant. I have a 1984 Montauk 17. Many of the screws that hold the railing and other items to the fiberglass are loose or missing and cannot be tightened up. What is the remedy for this problem? No, my wife will not accept it's time for a new whaler. My fasteners are machine screws and apparently whatever nuts were embedded in the foam behind the fiberglass are lost in there and larger screws will pull out of the fiberglass. Does anyone know of a specific fastener for this unique application? Perhaps a special molly type of fastener? What is Marine-Tex and will it attack the foam behind the fiberglass when filling the cavity? |

In a pinch, for wood, sometimes you can simply slip a few tootpicks inside a egged out hole, re-screw, and break off any leftover. But Nitro V solution is best. |

Marine-tex is kind of like a peanut butter thick epoxy. It will not damage the foam or fiberglass. If you use the search facility on the website loose screws have been discussed a number of times. Some like Marine-tex, some like epoxy with toothpicks or bamboo skewers, some use 3M's 5200, I prefer either Marine-tex (get it at most chandlery's) or thickened epoxt (West Systems is real good stuff). Do a search and you will find other ideas then decide what appeals to you. |

I drilled a 1/2-inch dia hole and dug out some foam from the side so that there would be some bite and filled with Marine Tex. Let dry, ground down and re drilled. Has held up very well. |
