During a very slow morning at work today, I found myself searching craigslist for whalers. I came across a '15 for short money down in Quincy, about a 40min ride from me. I called the seller, he seemed to be very interested in getting rid of the boat before winter and excited that I was ready to come down to look at it, I called right after it went on so I thought I may have stumbled on a deal. I run home, grad a few different sized hitchs for my truck, a plate, stop at the bank for cash and head down to see it.

I get there and it looks well used, but clean. Boats sat in the water every summer for over 10 years that they've owned in, they have a 30 something foot boat in the hamptons and use the 15 to run around in. Powered with a late 80's 55hp Suzuki... started right up and ran well despite the face that it looked like cosmetic mess.... I get to looking at the bottom of the hull, oh man. Tons and old and sloppy fiberglass repairs, soft spot in the middle seeping water, and there was also a spot on the deck that needed some fiberglass work. The boat was so heavy I couldn't lift either of the stern conners or the bow..... then the real deal breaker when I found the gel coat was actually separating from the foam in the stern hull sides... where the BW decal was you could push the skin in and out with your finger... I've never seen a whaler like this in before.

Its really too bad, being how hard 15's are to come across around here.
When a whaler gets to this point, is it no longer serviceable? I know wet boats can be somewhat dried out... but how would one go about fixing the hull sides? If its even possible?

If anyone's interested in this project... I had the seller down to $1900 when I passed her up

I agree that at 1900 it is very tempting... I was going go for it then drill some holes and try to dry her out over the winter.. untill i noticed the flexing in the hull sides.
