Last night I removed the bow railing from my [1977] Montauk. I plan to drill the holes out with a 1/2-inch drill but, fill the hole with Marine Tex, and finish off with Gel Coat. After everything is finished I will sand, and drill for the correct screw. All screws [came] out very easily, accept the two closest to the Norman pin. These screws both snapped just below the head. They appear to be machine screws. What do they screw into? I will have to drill them out. I wonder if I need to tap something. Or will the MarineTex method also work here after drilling them out?

Andre,

The screws at the bow are machine screws that are tapped into an imbedded 3/8" thick piece of aluminum. They are almost always frozen in place after this many years.

See the wood locating diagram for that hull to see the aluminum backing:

You will need to drill them out and clean up the threads with a tap...if yo are lucky. If you wander off center with your drilling, which is very likely, you may need to just drill a new hole alongside the old position and live with the misalignment.

This article will give you a great idea for fixing your Norman pin problem.

Thanks for the replies, I hope to try and drill them out this weekend and go from there. The great thing is I have a lot of time for these repairs!!

I have read that rather than tapping(or self tapping screws)the tex can be allowed to cure (not completely hard). The screws that have silicon sprayed on them can be inserted into the tex and the silicon will allow the screws to release later, Has anyone tried this method? I don't know if it would work as I have to do all the screws so I might have an alignment issue.
