[My OMC Jet 115-HP engine has] an overheating problem. [P]lease help. [T]he engine has been rebuilt and all is mechanically fine. [I] suspect that the previous owner beached the boat and ran sand into the intake. [B]eing in [H]ouston [I] have been advised to have the thermostats removed. [S]hould [I] remove the thermostats?

[I]s there a simple way to remove the thermostats besides pulling the engine?

[I]s there a simple way to clear the cooling channels besides pulling the thermostats?

[A]ny advise would be greatly appreciated.

I would not remove the thermostats. They are an integral part of your cooling system. Your motor would have the bubbleback exhaust and the thermostats are a real pain to get to. It probably would be easier to pull the powerhead to replace them if the access is limited.

[I] would like to remove the thermostats but the access is very limited. [S]everal discussions have recommended pulling the thermostats, especially if you live in a warm climate like [I] do. [Is there a] trick to get out [the thermostats] without pulling the engine?

[I] can't understand why [the engine manufacturer and boat manufacturer] would put a $20 part in a place that to get to takes a $500 engine pull.

[I] think that the original owner beached in and got sand up in the cooling channels, but there is no way to flush it with out removing the thermostats.

[C]an the engine be back flushed?

[H]elp.

On the Bubbleback V-4's outboards I use a snap-on 1/4-inch drive with a swivel socket with some success. If that doesn't work I usually just pull the powerhead. Pulling the powerhead should be straight forward in your case [because] the engine was recently rebuilt and should come apart easily.

If you are set on pulling out the thermostats you will still need back pressure in the cooling system. I don't recommend it but some use two washers with a 1/4-inch hole and a rubber gasket. I still think you should just buy the stainless steel thermostats and let the cooling system operate as it was designed. Just because you live in a warm climate doesn't mean your engine will reach the right temperature without thermostats. You may get plenty of practice pulling the powerhead though.

I agree that pulling the thermostats is not a good idea. If you are concerned mainly about debris entering the engine a raw water filter system is a must. Not many turbojets came from the factory with them installed.

Generally speaking, sand is not the enemy of these engines, pea gravel is. Removing the t-stats will not force any more water into the motor. How long since the engine was rebuilt? You need to baby those engines for at least 10 hrs and run 25:1 during the break in.
