Just got this older 200-HP Mercury, probably about 1985. [The power tilt and trim assembly] has the square-style motor, valve body, and a round fluid canister all in-line. The valve body has a 1-inch plug, and a 1/2-inch plug with a thumb-T cast on top of it. Which of these two plugs is the fill site? Or, does the canister have to come off for filling? Thanks for any help and suggestions!

Canister does not come off. I believe it is the slotted round flush screw that is the fill. Use an oil can and squirt in the ATF.

Tilt outboard to the full up position and engage the tilt support lock.
Remove fill cap and check fluid level. The fluid level should be even with the bottom
of the fill hole. Add Quicksilver Power Trim & Steering Fluid. If not available, use automotive
(ATF) automatic transmission fluid.

Hope this helps.

Plug for this merc is on the upper side and on the left side ( motor viewed from rear). Seems to be slotted from merc .pdf documentation.
