Yesterday we found the bilge of my 1995 Outrage 21 very full of water, with a nonfunctioning bilge pump. Fortunately we had a bucket onboard for manual bailing.

I'll replace the pump and check for any other issues with the wiring of that circuit as soon as possible, but I was surprised to see how much water had accumulated. We haven't had rain in many months, and the boat's ride is very dry. I do keep it in a slip.

I've noticed there's an opening between the bow anchor locker and the bilge, though the anchor locker is designed to drain through another route. Thanks to the self-bailing design, I'd think that any water from hosing down the deck would run out the scuppers on each side.

Given all of the above, my question is: What would be the usual route for significant water to get into the bilge on one of these mid- to late-1990s deep-V Whalers?

I've been wondering the same thing but have not investigated yet. I assumed that the anchor locker drain was the likely canidate, however other thoughts that come to mind now that you stimulated my thinking. One is the fish box thru hulls or any other thru hulls that are not sealed well. I have noticed that the bilge pump will turn on when washing the boat but I don't know if that water is coming in thru the anchor locker or the transom well hatches.

I also have a 1995 Outrage 21. When I wash it down after a trip, it ends up with water in the bilge. Its not from the bow area but somewhere on the deck. I have to manuall run the pump for a few seconds to empty it out.

My concern with the design is having a fuel tank that ends right at the bilge - aluminum in constant contact with saltwater.

I have the 21 Outrage's little brother the 20 Outrage. I have also spent a good amount of time on a 24 Outrage of the same vintage. Water can get into the bilge a number of ways.

1. Water can run between the splash well hatch and or the fiberglass piece that holds the splash well hatch. I've seen the 5200 loosen up and allow water to drain into the bilge. The bilge access hatch back there may need a new gasket.

2. The little deck plate/access plates may need new gaskets. These will allow water to run down the top of the fuel tank into the bilge.

3. The in deck fish boxes my be leaking where the pump out fittings are installed.

4. If you have the livewell/leaning post, washing that out will allow water to drain through the hole that the livewell drain hose goes through.

5. If any of the 5200 sealing the fuel tank cover (aka the deck) is broken then water can drain down onto the fuel tank then into the bilge.

That's about all I can think of.
