I can not tell what color the inside of my whaler is. I am trying to restore the 2 million spider cracks and order some repair kits thru Spectrum. They list 2 colors for my boat, a desert tan or grey. It is so faded or I am so blind that I can't tell what it should be? Thanks for your help!

The interior of a 1977 Montauk was molded with "Outrage Grey" (a.k.a. Lt. Grey).

The trouble with old hulls that have faded is that the color of the gel coat has probably changed so the Spectrum color may not be a perfect match.

It would be best to wet sand and buff to help restore color before attempting any gel coat repairs.

Thanks for your reply. I went on Spectrum's web and it is avail. I wonder why they don't offer white for that year. I wanted to touch up the exterior also? Jeff

I can tell you from RECENT experience, Spectrum's
"Outrage Grey" is a joke, at least with respect for it's namesake, the 70's era Outrages. Whether it is the right color for a Montauk interior I don't know. If you are going to buy it, in liquid form, order their color tinting kit also.

I own two 70's vintage Outrages, a 1971 ribside 21, and a 1975 Outrage 19 (which uses the same inner and outer colors as the 21 smoothside Outrage), and the Spectrum "Outrage Grey" is not even close for any of the three colors Whaler used during those years. It is way too white for any of them. And supposedly the interior of the 73-79's Outrages was Desert Tan, and Spectrum's Desert tan isn't even close there either!

I would be anxious to hear if this color matches the Montauk's interior.

Excuse me, I have complete misspoken. The interior of the 1977 Montauk, as are all Montauks before the early 1990s, were molded in Desert Tan.

It is the exterior of the 1973-1984 Montauks that is Outrage Grey, which is really just an off-white.

Montauks ( and all the other small Whalers) built from 1984 on were molded with Desert Tan both inside and out.

Both liquid gel coat and gel coat patch paste can easily be modified with tints to adjust the color if need be.

Agree that the Spectrum Outrage Grey is to white for the 1978 21 foot Revenge hull, I have a $100 quart that's not even close.

I've tried to color it with some success, but found that White Marine Tex will turn to just about the right tint after a few years in the sun due to UV impact and is a whole lot easier to work with. I haven't tried it on spider cracks though. I did gouge out some to try the gel coat in and it all came out when I hit it with a power washer so I think my prep wasn't good, or the acrylic tint I added caused it to not set up correctly.

I'm still playing with the gel coat though, been picking up color chips of paint samples at Home Depot and Lowe's to try and match. Got some pretty close and now have to go and buy a quarts worth of the tints that they put into a can of white when you buy paint of any color other than white.

I also have a 77 Montauk while the interior color is supposed dessert tan. The Spectrum patch kit I have is not close. The GC does not appear to have faded much as the color under the stantions is the same as the cleaned up gel.

Please post what you find out. BTW, I purchased my patch kit off ebay based on someone else who said it matched their Outrage interior. My interior appears "tanner" as a description (if that's not a word).

How are you going to approach the non skid does it also have cracking?

Some one mentioned to find a paint sample that matches you interior color and then tint the patch kit to match.

Spectrum desert tan matches my 76 Revenge and 76 Whaler interior [erfectly, along with every other DT interior I have used it on. Their Outrage Grey however was not even close on my revenge.
