This is not a project just a topic for debate. If you were going to replace an 2004 Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE with carburetors, what would be your engine of choice?

Mercury 90 ELPTO two-cycle.

Staying with Mercury saves some expense in the rigging. A Mercury 90-HP FOURSTROKE (Veradito or L4NA or Petite Verado or the non-supercharged motor based on the Verado) would probably bolt right up to the existing gear.

If you change brands, the field is wide open. The new HONDA BF90D is an option, the E-TEC 90 is a great engine, and Suzuki just announced a new DF90 motor.

My actual choice would be influenced by:

--quality of local dealer providing support
--size and weight and how they match to the boat
--performance characteristics
--cost, both initial cost and operating costs

If the price of rigging was low enough I would go with E-Tec 90, next in line would be a Merc 90 4 stroke.

What's wrong with your current engine?

There is nothing wrong with my current motor other than the issue over carbs gumming up.

As I said this was not a project just wanted to gauge other peoples ideas

The local independent shop recently swapped out a 90HP on a RIB for an ETEC and the cost was like $10,500.00 including rigging it

I agree with Dave above...90 Merc 2 stroke ELPTO-most bang for the buck. This is a bullet proof, reliable and very strong engine with surprising fuel economy. Not a lightweight at 305 lbs. but not a heavy weight either. If not for government interference this engine might have evolved into a fuel injected world beater. I have owned many of these work horses and currently have one pushing a 21 Outrage (banana) and a 75hp version pushing my Montauk ... Just my opinion, mind you!

The reason for his post is because he is dissatisfied with carbs and their ability to be rebuilt every week due to ethanol...so why are people recommending carburated engines?

The new Suzuki would be my choice.

Since this is just a discussion on personal thoughts, for a 170 Montauk I personally would rig a new 135 E-Tec. I know people get skidish at overpowering however, it is the same size as a 115 so why wold you not want the best power to weight ratio you can get?

I don't believe there is any evidence to indicate that the Merc 90 ELPTO has problems with carbs gumming up with or without ethanol in the fuel. The 4-stroke with carbs is a completely different design.
