Our sailing club re-powered a Montauk safety boat with a new E-TEC 75 in 2007. After only 50 hours the gasket failed between the power head and the exhaust cooling plate, allowing sea water to spray inside the cowling for several hours. Ulitmately BRP replaced the powerhead, along with the starter motor and intake manifold. This past season the same gasket failed again, resulting in warranty replacement of the gasket, starter motor, and intake manifold.

The E-TEC technician [thinks the cause of failure is] mal-fitting surfaces. But this was a different powerhead. The download of engine operations shows no excessive high-RPM time, just a normal pattern of use. I did a search of CW and came up with nothing.

I'm submitting this hoping one of the E-TEC owners or techs can help provide some information as to why this is recurring. Thanks,

JimL

The power head is just one surface. The exhaust tower is the other. In my opinion, gaskets rarely just fail. They are typically misinstalled. However for two to fail, I'd be looking at the exhaust tower mating surfase.

That is an odd leak. Pretty simple. Like pressure is building up. Is the engine propped for top end of red line RPM? The forum here talked a lot about over propping the E-TEC causing much harm.

What is the WOT RPM the engine runs at normal load?

If the engine is over propped it could over heat and pressure the cooling system.
