Where can [I] get paint for a touch-up of the cowling on my 2005 Yamaha 115-HP four-cycle motor. Some call [the color of the paint] blue but is really shiny charcoal.

Your Yamaha dealer should have it. Over priced for a can of spray paint, but it's the right color. |

Is there an aftermarket supplier? Tempo. |

Since probably only one can of paint is needed to perform a "touch-up", how much difference in price between the factory original OEM paint and an after-market substitute would there need to be before it would influence the decision about which one to buy? |

I've found dealer OEM spray paint cheaper than aftermarket brands at marine stores. And it matches better. |

Yamaha (Color Rite brand) was about $22/spray can at my local dealer. The Tempo brand was about $12.The Color Rite brand matches--mostly. It's not exact. You HAVE to put a clear on top of it (Color Rite will also sell you that for about $17, but I used another brand I had). If you don't use a clear, the color is not even close. I found that the Tempo brand wasn't close with or without a clear, and ended up sanding it off. Why Yamaha can't sell a touch up brush or spray paint basecoat/clearcoat, I just don't understand. |

Tempo has been out of business for some time. Must be pretty old stock. I wonder what shelf life is for spray paint? $22.00 a can for Yamaha paint must be full list price. +Most dealers will give a discount - just ask. |

Many dealers--even boaters world--still have Tempo stock. I purchased the paint about a year ago, but I still see it around. The $22.00 is what the Color Rite cost. I typically don't try and haggle prices on things like that. |

Quote "Why Yamaha can't sell a touch up brush or spray paint basecoat/clearcoat, I just don't understand." EndQuoteFrom what I remember from reading the ColorRite website, they ARE the OEM for Yamaha paint. I would assume that that means that Yamaha buys the paint from THEM. Colors should match, if neither has been exposed to the elements, such as the sun. Just guessing. Several car/boat painters that I have spoken to say they go to the Pittsburgh Paints Special Products section and buy their paint there (it's a two-part urethane, I think). --- WhalerAce

Whalerace-That's just it-at least for Yamaha products, the paint will NOT match until you apply a clear, and then only in the correct layers. Even then it's a crap shoot. I just don't see why it is so difficult to sell a paint that is a clear and base in one, that actually matches. |

Because the clear puts a clear layer over the color. You can't do that ine one pass. If it could be done in one pass, the car makers would do it. Chuck
