My 170 Montauk has the standard bow cleat and two aft cleats. Has anyone added additional cleats forward of the center console?

I'm not sure if this will help, but I have a 2003 that didn't have stern cleats. I checked the diagrams for where the [embedded reinforcements are] in my boat and there was none where the cleats are located on the newer models. But I added them anyway. I used #14 1-1/2-inch stainless steel sheet metal screws, drilled a hole that was very tight for the screws, and, before I put it all together, I filled the holes with 3M 5200, covering the bottom of the cleat also. That way they are both glued and fastened. I know they are on there without backing so I never try to pull anything with them but I do use them to dock when we go to lunch or at out floating dock while going for the trailer. No signs of any movement yet.

I had a friend with a Montauk 170 who single-handed a lot. He put cleats right next to where he stood at the console. They were fine to hold the boat while he parked the truck, started the boat, and warmed up.

I added forward cleats on my 2005 170 this summer. They are much easier to use than the center bow one. I'll try and dig up a photo for you.

As mentioned above, if you install a cleat into the hull in an area where there is no embedded reinforcement, I wouldn't rely on it for any sort of heavy strain. You might hang a fender from it or use it for a temporary mooring.

Spring line or midships cleats are an important necessity which BW frequently neglects; why, I really don't know. Here's one of many discussions found using the local search function regarding these very helpful additions to one's boat (with a photo of the ones I added to my classic Outrage 18):

When you start using these while docking, you'll never go back to the cumbersome and occasionally dangerous bow/stern line nonsense, especially if you're single-handing.
