So I've been trying to restore an old 1960-something 13' Whaler for awhile now. Had to do major fiberglass work which included cutting away and repairing a huge fracture in the left side, and rebuilding the bow. Now comes the decision on what to power the boat with. I bought a '73 25hp Johnson short shaft to start but it seems to have a leeking lower unit due to the puddle of fluid i discovered was collecting on the ground below the prop. I currently have a '90-something Evinrude 30hp 20" shaft that hasn't run in 10+ years. What are my options with this motor because i think the 25hp is too small. Can i put the 20" shaft Evinrude on the boat despite the 15" transom of the boat? Should i buy a jack-plate? Any info would be greatly appreciated, and any other info about the boat I should know about would be helpful, Thank you. |

There's a 5-inch transom extender available at: http://www.trmarine.com/cat.html It's about $50.00. Used one on my brother's boat - works great! |

I am also in the process of restoring a 1960-something thirteen-foot Sport, hull number 2559. I would like to be able to date her more accurately than the guess offered by the factory, and the 1958-1961 time span offered by other historians. Are you aware of any evidence of your boat being a 1960 Boston Whaler? And most interestingly, have you identified your hull number? I am very interested in hearing from other members who have similar information and can enlighten me to the production year and date of my boat. |
