Last time out in my Outrage 22 the 1991 Evinrude 200-HP motor ran very well until it was time to head to the house. In the Atlantic Intracoastal Water Way (AIWW), the motor began surging. When I got home, I changed the both the Racor fuel-water separator element and the in-line fuel filter under the cowling. The problem did not go away. By the way, the fuel in the bowl was in great shape--no crud or water visible. I am pretty sure that the problem is fuel related, so I changed the fuel pump. The motor started right up and ran for about 10 minutes and died. It will not restart. I suspect that I may have a blockage in the fuel pick-up in the tank. I removed the floor plate and disconnected the various fittings on top of the tank. I expected to pull the pick-up out of the tank with the last fitting, but it appears to be welded in the tank. I tried to grip it with needle nose pliers without success. What am I missing? What other diagnosis is possible, given these conditions? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

padre, The second time out with my Outrage 18 my brand new Yamaha 150 died. The problem was as you have diagnosed. On the end of the pickup there is a small screen that was plugged. I removed the screen as I had a large fuel-water separator filter that I had just installed. No further problems. The pick-up tube is screwed into the top of the tank. It at first glance looks like the larger portion of that fitting should come out but doesn's. It is screwed in, at least on mine. high sierra |

I have found this to be the easiest way to diagnose fuel delivery problems: [Disconnect the fuel line] at the engine, and remove any connector from the fuel line. Put the fuel line, without the connector, into an empty fuel container. Pump the primer ball. It should pump easily, and you should get a heavy, unrestricted fuel flow. If the flow stops, and the ball collapses, the vent is blocked. If you are not getting complete and unrestricted flow, it may be the tank inlet or a fuel line [malfunction]. Remember, older fuel line can look perfect, and be collapsed internally. |

What did you find? |

Note that a clean filter bowl only means that no water has been ingested by the filter. Particulate and algae get caught in the filter element, above the bowl, and will not be visible in the bowl itself. Filter elements should be replaced yearly in most cases; more often if you have older tanks, or get your fuel from questionable sources. |

I have a 1979 22 outrage and had a similar problem with my engine surging and found the screen in the pickup was glogged.I removed the screen and the problem went away. The pickup is screwed in but the fitting looks like it is welded. If you have a fuel/water filter then the screen is not needed anyway. Also the anti siphon valve in the tank fitting had a piece of grud and was not opening all the way which caused problem with fuel flow. All boats have a anti siphon valve from the factory. The valve is supposed to shut the fuel off in the case of a fuel line rupture.Just a few ideas. |
