Hello. I own an [1987] Boston Whaler MONTAUK 17. I am considering adding a poling platform above the motor. I use the boat exclusively in south Florida and the Keys and like to fish in skinny areas. I plan on selling it in two years. Is a poling platform an option people want to avoid when looking for a used Boston Whaler boat? Or is it an added bonus?

Half of the reason I am considering adding it is for poling the boat, one-quarter of the reason for adding it is for a place to sit, and one-quarter of the reason for adding it is for additional rod holders.

Any opinions?

Thanks,

So long as it is a good looking and sturdy platform that is properly mounted and rigged it should not detract from the value of the boat except for those that are looking specifically for a factory stock boat.

Since you are located in the Keys your primary resale market would likely be to someone who may have similar interests as far as flats fishing goes, so the platform might have added value.

OTOH, who cares about the added value? If you want to add it to your boat just do it and enjoy the benefits!

Yes, that's what I was thinking. But on the other side it is a bone stock boat right now, and I know a lot of people like to keep their Boston Whaler boats "classic."

Owner-added structures generally tend to detract from the value of a used Boston Whaler boat unless the design and workmanship of the addition is similar in style and quality to the original boat.
