Were the 70s steering wheels stainless steel? What does it take to install one on a teleflex steering wheel?

The first Stainless wheel used on a Whaler was the four spoke wheel used on the original Outrage.

The five spoke stainless steel "Destroyer" wheel was used on some 1970s Whalers and not on others.

The first ones showed up as options on the small Whalers in the mid 1970s. By the end of the 1970s they had become standard across the Whaler product line.

To install one, remove the existing wheel, install the new one. So long as the helm uses the standard 3/4" shaft, there is not much to it.

Because I looked the looks of a SS wheel, I installed once on a 17 Whaler that came a plastic wheel. Looked great, fit right on as shaft size was the same. I spent a lot of time on the Florida keys, and frequently got in the boat wet (saltwater). I had a new 90 Evinrude on it, and what was weird was that while run with salty wet hands on the SS hweel, I would get shocked slightly on a regular basis, since it conducted electricity. Never figured out where the "leak" was, just had to deal with it. Sold that boatm, and some years later (1990) I bought another 17, repowered new Johnson 90, put on a SS wheel, and guess what? Same deal. Plastic wheel, no shock, but that SS wheel...!! Probably operator error! (:> Dang the luck. If you use one, be mindful this could happen to you.

Apologies for the typos! Try again:

Tom W - I have a 1978 13ft that I am putting back together. I took a 15 1/2 5 spoke destroyer off it, and will be replacing it with a new wheel. Did the 13 Sport come use only the 15 1/2 or was a 13inch wheel ever used? It would make sense on a smaller boat to have a smaller wheel? Also, what was the center cap made out of in the late 1970's. Thanks, T

A 1978 Sport 13 would have had a 15-1/2"ish five spoke stainless steel steering wheel with a teak center cap.
