I am in the process of removing and replacing my original 1985 super sport 15' steering with a NFB teleflex cable system. I got the helm apart and now am removing the cable from the engine all of the nuts are loose but the cable does not come out. my question is do you just yank it out, is it threaded in like the helm. should it slide out ...?? The shaft slides very easy back and forth and the metal rod that holds the steering linkage moves with it; should the entire piece come out.?

Spray some WD-40 in the tilt tube to loosen up the dried grease and then pound it out from the port side.

The steering cable will just pull out but because of the shape of the 15's transom, you need to loosen the engine mounting bolts and back the port bolts off enough so the engine (and its tilt tube) will angle a bit and allow the steering cable to pull out to starboard.

I have the engine bolts off held by a jack very loose and moveable, but the cable does not slide out all the way it slides then stops when the steering rod on port hits the engine does it need to be hit on the rod to remove it I don't want to #$%@ it up.
