Re [a Mercury 30-HP FOURSTROKE EFI] engine on a Sport 13: I have been analyzing spreadsheets with engine options for the past three months and still can't [make a decision]. Please share your thoughts on overall performance. I am also considering a Yamaha 40HP non-EFI (as it is lighter than the new EFI version), and the Evinrude 30HP (which I believe is being introduced soon).

wt,
Me too, when the day comes to repower.

30 E-TEC sounds right to me, and I have a dealer nearby. I've seen the 25 at the New England Boat Show, and it looks fantastic. But "something" is holding up the 30's from release.
I really lean toward EFI or DFI instead of carbs.

It's generally accepted that a 25-30 hp is plenty for the 13.
A friend had a 130 Sport with a Merc 25 4-stroke, and it ran great with 1-2 people, and suffered with 4 large adults. The 130 Sport is way heavier than a classic 13.

I think the 13 classic with a 30 EFIDFI is going to be a great match.

BTW, there is a 2-stroke 40hp Tohatsu TLDI, (similar to Optimax) No smoke, great acceleration.....but sparse dealship network.

we have an 02 johnson 40...gives more than enough power for 1 or 2 people, but it's great when we have 5-6 people and a bunch of gear for our little sailboat...30-35hp has always been the right motor for these boats.

personally, i don't know too much about the new 30hp etecs, but i'd like one too!

I found a used 2005 that I'm about to jump on. What's the best price you have found for that 30hp Mercury?

Anything under $3k would be a good/great deal depending on options. I almost bought a new 25 Suzuki w/NO PTnT and a tiller for $2200 but found out you can't convert to remote.

I have received a number of quotes for a new Mercury 30HP EFI. All were right around $5,000. I was quoted $4,335 for the 25HP. These prices seem high!

UPDATE: I just got a quote for $4,800 including cables, controls, prop, and install! Add a little tax, and that is the best I've found!

Check out the new HONDA motor in that horsepower range, too. It just came out. It is not an automobile block motor.

I was not talking PTnT which can add $500 or so. So $4800 complete is not that crazy since Ed's gets like $4k just for the engine.
