I have a question for one of the resident experts out here regarding the factory kicker motor bracket on my 1978 Outrage 21.I currently have a 9.9 Force kicker that is at the end of it's useful life. I could have it rebuilt, but due to it's age, I feel that I would be throwing away my good money trying to make it last another season. If I have it rebuilt, I probably won't have true confidence in it. It let me down at the end of the season, and I don't need the aggrivation. I have decided to get my hands on a new motor. The logical choice would be to simply replace it with another 9.9 Mercury (so that it drops in place & works with my controls @ the helm). I have been toying with the idea of upgrading to either a 15 or 25 hp outboard, but am concerned about the additional weight & stress on the bracket. Does anyone know how much I can safely put on the factory bracket? Is there a big difference in the weight of the motors? Is there a better kicker bracket available for this hull? Any imput is appreciated. The last thing I need is the bracket failing & the new motor falling off the back of the boat.

I checked the mercury web site. The weight of a 9.9 hp is between 84# and 108# and the 15 hp is between 115# to 132#, depending on the model. The 20 hp comes in at 115#. The 25 hp outboard is 157#. We will cut that one out, I think that it is a little too heavy. I have never seen any other style bracket mounted on these boats. With the shape of the transom, I do not see any other way of mounting a more substantial kicker bracket. Am I out of my head for even considering putting a 20 hp kicker on the factory bracket?

Flippa-How do you use your kicker? Just for trolling and emergency? The max I have ever heard of for a kicker on a bracket is 15. Just can't see why you would want more? I am looking at the Yamaha T9.9 for a 22 Revenge. |

8-10hp designed for kicking is all you will EVER need on a boat like this. |

I do not believe you will get any additional speed out of a higher h.p. kicker. 9.9 sounds ideal. |

I just replaced my old Honda 15 HP with a new Yamaha T9.9 high thrust, gived me all I will ever need and good control with the large prop. I think Yamaha has a bunch of 07/08 mfg'd T9.9's floating around and the dealers here were selling them for about $2200 at the Seattle boat show. That is an excellent price and when I bought mine they were giving 6 years of Yamaha warranty at the time. Bayside in Everett had 5 in stock, have no idea if they sold all of them. |

I use the kicker mostly for trolling. I also will use it for motoring in areas that are headway speed only (all of inner Boston Haror & the rivers) as it will push the boat @ 7 to 8 mph.The 9.9 does a fine job, but it seems a little underpowered. It was kind of old & tired when it ran. I imagine a new 9.9 motor will have alot more thrust/power. I was considering a bigger kicker motor just to have the additional power. Should I bother jumping up to the 15, or just replace the 9.9? Any benefits to more hp, or would it be a waste of cash.

I will be amazed if your Force put out 7.5hp new. A 9.9 of a real brand would smoke one out of the box. My bud had a 15 force and my 9.9 was faster. |

Thanks for the replies.Yeah, the force is a P.O.S.; I doubt it is even a 5 hp. I have used it quite a bit, as the previous owner did, and it is real tired. Mary at Boats & Motors gave me the same answers as you guys; a real 9.9 is plenty for the boat & the motor bracket wouldn't handle the bigger motor. I was leaning towards the bigger motor just in case I needed more power in an emergency situation. The 9.9 will fit the bill just fine. If I get in an emergency situation where the main engine dies, I will call Towboat US. |
