Can someone tell me what type of spacer was used under the lip of the bow for the bow chock mounting screws in the mid 80's on a 13'? I think they were two chrome plated bronze spacers Oh yeah, I also need to find these once I identify exactly what was used! any ideas?

Thanks,
Kevin

5/16" finish (a.k.a. cup) washers.

The originals might have been chrome plates brass. It will be easier to find stainless steel now.

I have never seen one mounted with finishing washers. It needs to be something that will follow the contour of the rounded area under the rub rail. I think at some point I remember seeing a boat with what looked to be some type of chromed spacer but now I cannot locate a picture. I need this for a restoration I am working on.

I have. Finish washers are stamped form sheet metal and will easily and nicely conform to odd surfaces when under compression.

You asked about a mid-1980s 13 footer. By then Whaler no longer used the partial cylindrical spacers they used back in the 1960s, l which may be what you are thinking of.

Checking some exploded parts diagrams I have, I see that by the late 1980s they did not use any washer at all, instead counter sinking a flat head 5/16" machine screw into the hull. This comports with the mounting method of the bow light on my 1988 Montauk which used those same screws mounted flush.

My (vague) recollection of my 1980 and 1981 Montauks is that finish washers were used back then.

That makes sense. Now that I think about it I recall that it was an older boat that I saw the spacers. Sounds like countersinking is the way for me to go. Thanks Tom.

I can confirm that counter sunk flat head phillips machine screws with no spacers were used on 1986 13' since I just repaired one that pulled thru the hull laminate.

You know now that I think about it the spacers seem like a good idea after all. They act as a small backing plate to hopefully prevent the problem described above. That said, does have some of these spacers that they do not need or know of a source?

Thanks,
Kevin
