"There are those that have and those that will..." So goes the saying. I now have. I have twin Merc. 200 EFIs. I was motoring in FWD idle out of the marina and the port engine stalled. I restarted and placed the throttle into advance neutral (neutral but with the lever's button pushed to increase throttle) to about 1200 rpms to let the engine warm up. The starboard engine was powering the boat forward. I became distracted in conversation about fishing o women, (you know, something important) and as we passed the speed limmit markers, I pushed up the throttles to accelerate. After about 20-30 seconds I realized that the port engine was still in neutral. RPM on the port engine appraoched 6000. I retarded the throttles, waited until rpms came back. When I tried to put the port engine back into forward but would not go into gear. As I continued to advanced the throttle the engine finally went into gear with a loud clunk. FWD and Reverse behave the same with the throttle needing to be advanced well beyond normal to get fwd/rvrs engagement. Once the engine is in gear it works noramlly but comes out of gear prior to the neutral detent in both fwd and reverse. Any insight into what I might have gooned up? It almost looks like the shift cable got all out of adjustment due to the over reving. Thanks.

Recommend you disconnet the throttle shift cables at the engine, and make sure control is moving the cables correctly. Then re-connect at engine according to Merc's instructions and see how it works. If still no good, you may have damaged the gearcase.

The shift cable mechanism in the remote itself must have gotten all gooned up when I overreved in advance neutral. I went back to troubleshoot the problem a few days later and it worked fine, as if it never happened. Weird. I'm much relieved but it did casue me some stress.
