I am installing a Teleflex mechanical cable steering system on my 13-footer. I am curious how or if you can bend the cable in radius small enough to stay inside the boat when using the Teleflex transom mount. Seems like that bend would be too small a radius.

Huh ? Not sure what you are asking. What year model is your 13? Does your 13 have a 15" transom and if so are you trying to use the steering tube on the motor?

[The boat in question is a 1973 Boston Whaler] 13-footer with the 15-inch transom. I'm using one of the [Teleflex] standoffs to mount the steering cable to transom. It seems like where [it is] mounted you need to bend the cable sharply to stay within the boat and run down the side to the console. Any help is appreciated.

I think I was confused..I thought your question was on the bend in the cable and where it attaches to the motor. I have a 1961 13' Whaler with the stand off bracket and where its mounted to the transon I don't have any problems with the bend in the cable. You may have it mounted to close to the Starboard side and can't make the bend. Do you have a picture of the bracket attached to you boat??

BTW, According to the reference section on this site, if your boat is a 73 it should be a 20" Transom.

There is an excellent picture of a stand off bracket installation on a 13 Whaler with a 15" transom in the Cetacea section page 57.. You can see how easy the bend is on the teleflex cable with the bracket mounted in the correct position. Hope this helps.

I installed a Teleflex cable with the standoff bracket 2 years ago. I kept it all within the boat using a relatively short cable. (I want to say 7 ft, - but be wary as I have a bad memory.) Nice tight fit with a curve at the transom within the limits of the Teleflex spec. And the steering works perfectly. My boat is still covered (I live in the northeast), but if you would like for me to take some photos and look for the actual length of the cable, I will.

I think the key to making the cable fit into the boat is the choice of the right length of cable. Since it is a short cable, there is not much room for any extra cable length to be absorbed.

Thanks for all the help. I think 7 foot is correct as I mounted the bracket with a clamp and routed the cable. thanks again, Jim
