Nick -- There are a couple things at work here, age and hull vs. complete model.Whaler hulls have grown heavier over the years. This was even true in the 1960s. Part of the reason is that the foam used grew in density as Whaler realized the hulls would hold up better if the foam could be made more dense.
I also suspect that the thickness of the laminates was increased to make the hulls stronger.
The bare 16' 7" hull was listed as weighing 500 pounds up though 1971. By 1972 the bare hull was listed as weighing 550 pounds.
But that is just the hull. Once you add the console, seats and miscellaneous components to make a complete model, the weigh will obviously be more.
Whaler did not list model specific weights until 1974 by which time the Nauset was no longer offered. However they list the Montauk and Sakonnet models as weighing between 770 and 900 pounds.
Yes, the smirked hulls weigh more too because they have a greater volume and thus more foam and because of the ever increasing robustness of the Whaler construction process. By 1977 the smirked hull Montauk was listed as weighing 850 pounds.
