Assume [a 1968 Nauset] is not water logged. What should it weigh? Thanks

The bare hull should weigh 500 pounds.

That light? I thought at least 650-700. Isn't the nauset over 800lbs complete? No wonder why my 68 flies with that 60 on it. How much is a smirked bare hull?

You can read all about a 1968 NAUSET's hull in the REFERENCE article on it:

Nick -- There are a couple things at work here, age and hull vs. complete model.

Whaler hulls have grown heavier over the years. This was even true in the 1960s. Part of the reason is that the foam used grew in density as Whaler realized the hulls would hold up better if the foam could be made more dense.

I also suspect that the thickness of the laminates was increased to make the hulls stronger.

The bare 16' 7" hull was listed as weighing 500 pounds up though 1971. By 1972 the bare hull was listed as weighing 550 pounds.

But that is just the hull. Once you add the console, seats and miscellaneous components to make a complete model, the weigh will obviously be more.

Whaler did not list model specific weights until 1974 by which time the Nauset was no longer offered. However they list the Montauk and Sakonnet models as weighing between 770 and 900 pounds.

Yes, the smirked hulls weigh more too because they have a greater volume and thus more foam and because of the ever increasing robustness of the Whaler construction process. By 1977 the smirked hull Montauk was listed as weighing 850 pounds.

I knew my 68 was much lighter than my smirked. It rides more like a 13 than a 17. Wet biotch as well. I have not GPS'd it but with that 60 Merc and a 14" pitch prop she runs well into the 30's. Hull is also dry as a popcorn fart. Nothing in boat but an aftermarket console(40lbs?), rails, and 2 pedestals so she is under 800lbs rigged I bet.

Another point of reference: the 1965 catalog lists the 16' 7" bare hull weight as 500 pounds but also indicates the weight of the Eastport model as 825 pounds.

A Nauset was an Eastport without the stern bench seat so back that out for an estimate of the complete weight of a Nauset.

PS...Jim in that article you state the Newport debuted in 1977 but it is actually 1975 model year. It is in the 1975 brochure as well as the Katama.

I think the merc weighs 207lbs hence why I estimate 800 rigged.

Ps...my 1983 15 CC with 70 Johnson and full rails was about 800 rigged.
