I have a fuel tank on order for my 1988 OUTRAGE 18. What covering of the tank prior to install has been utilized? I was thinking about a Linex [apparently a brand name] or another sealant. I will be doing the install next month. [Give] any suggestions. Thanks.

If you want the tank coated, why not ask the manufacturer to coat it for you after fabrication? Check with the manufacturer of the fuel tank to see if they offer any coatings, what coatings they recommend, or if they even recommend a coating.

My fuel tank appears to be painted with zinc chromate paint. For decades aluminum products have been protected with zinc chromate against corrosion.

Thanks for tip. I am going to have Florida Marine Tanks do the tank. Price quoted is $711.00 and $783 for thicker tank.

There have been discussions here about using Line-X or Rhino-Liner (spray-on truck bed liner manufacturers) or similar; but others have expressed concern about corrosion if water gets between the liner and the aluminum. I don't think that would be a problem.

If I were to do my tank, I think I would take it down to a Line-X shop and have them shoot a non-textured application to coat the tank. It will likely add another $100 or so to the cost of the tank.

Good luck.

Hgoebel,

Get 1 quart of Durabak smooth and it should cover your tank. I have a quart of light blue textured (non skid)you can have for free if you want it. You can roll it on or brush it. Just remember if you use any of the bedliners, its there to stay and it adheres to aluminum very well.

Thanks for all of the info. I have elected to have the tanked coated with a polyuretherane by the local boat builder yard here.
