This 1985 Johnson 70hp VRO has provided over 20-years of reliable service hung on a 1982 Sport 15. Major carburetor and fuel system rebuild about five years ago and has run great ever since. Six weeks ago I took her out for about two hours and she ran well after warming up. I did notice it seemed the high speed carburetor jets (if thats what they are called) needed a few minutes to clear out (varnish?) and when they did the engine ran great. Fast forward to today, she wouldn't run well at all. My buddy had to contantly prime the bulb to keep enough fuel running to the carbs to keep us on plane. The fuel was fresh, there was plenty of oil in the VRO tank. The fuel filter looks ago. I'm wondering what is causing this problem? A leaky hose letting in air? I don't run the boat a lot, maybe 4-5 times a year. I do winterize the engine every year including fogging, adding fuel stabilizer and running the engine out of fuel.. Any suggestions? Hoping to attend the Whaler gathering at Lake Lanier next Saturday but only if I get fixed it in time. Thanks

I have the same engine and I know it sounds funny but this happened to me and it ended up being a sticky gas tank cap. The vent would'nt open and it would starve for gas. I also noticed the bulb would sometimes be sucked flat. who knows it could be something this simple I hope so for you sake.

I would ditto the vent, that has happened to me. Also, I would check- the fuel/water filter/separator. If you haven't changed it this season, then that might be a quick fix. I had the same problem on an old Evinrude 90 and I had to replace the fuel filter, and had to replace the fuel line under the cowl in the motor itself. It was leaking fuel so badly that it was pooling in the motor housing.
