I'am looking at a boat with sterndrives. How would one convert it to outboards? Any advice and comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced,
Richard

Simple, scrap all the sterndrive parts including the engines. Clean the mess that the engines made in the bilge. Fill in the holes in the transom. Reinforce the transom to hold outboards. Install the applicable bracket on the reinforced stern for the outboards, Figure out what you are going to do with all the extra space the I/O took up.

The only tricky thing is installing the bracket at the right height for your new setback. There is a formula, but I forgot it. Make sure you have enough setback for the tilt up on your outboards, May need 25" shafts, maybe 30".

Richard,

I would love to know what you have found. There is a guy I know in the pan handle of FL that converted a I/O outrage to a bracketed Outboard power. His user name is Mikejana so you could look it up however, I believe his personal site is no longer up and running to view images. I would be happy to pass his info along if you want to contact him for images.

If the boat your looking at has a flat transom, reinforcing the transom is a simple matter, however if the transom is radiused, it may be a little more involved. Also unless the modification was done in a professional manner, you may devalue the boat.
