Our 170 Montauk has an aftermarket fuel tank under the RPS. Is there an easy way to add a dash mounted electric fuel guage? We added a 94-quart cooler behind the RPS for extra storage and it makes it difficult to view the tank. We have a number of family members who use the boat and no one is good at checking the fuel level.

Just be glad it's a boat and not an airplane if "family members" can't or don't check fuel level.....

With my plastic tank (Moeller brand) - a simple visual check from either side of the "Z" legs reveals the actual level of the fuel sitting inside the tank. No need for a complicated gauge setup.

Here's how I solved that problem on my 2006 Montauk 170.

Your family members will learn after they run out of fuel a few times.

I cannot recall any remote electrical fuel tank level indicators being available for a plastic, on-deck portable tank. As several replies have already pointed out, the tank level is often easily deduced by visual inspection of the tank.

You might be able to engineer your own solution by adapting a fuel tank level sensor such as the CENTROID PRODUCTS electronic fuel tank level indicator. See

Marine fuel gauge sensors are notoriously inaccurate even on a larger boat with a permanent tank. I can't imagine they'd be any use at all on a small tank on a pitching and yawing small boat.
