Well, I finally took the steering (push rod style) off the outboard (1987 Mercury Blackmax) to see if the motor would swing left and right freely. . .

Nope.

So, I take the penetrating oil to the steering tube on the motor bracket, and with a lot of liquid wrench, and a lot of shaking, she finally freed up. Still tough to move, but eventually it was swinging free.

Cool.

Break out the grease gun preloaded with marine grease, two pumps, and BANG! I swear to the lord, it blew the whole side of that shaft apart.

Now What?

Whaler afficionados, I ask. . .

Now what the hell am I supposed to do?
Please give me some feedback.

Look for parts or repower. A grease gun does have the ability to produce a good amount of hydraulic pressure.

I think some clarification is needed to provide assistance.

The steering cable is threaded into the starboard side of the bracket. The inner rod goes inside the bracket tube and exits on the port side. The end of the rod attaches to an arm. The other end of the arm attaches to the engine.

If your steering cable was stuck in the tube (happens if not greased), you need to pull the cable and rod out of the tube, clean ALL the grease out of the tube and grease the rod and reinsert.

A steersman nut (nut with a grease fitting) on the port side will allow you to lubricate the rod. This should be done in the spring and fall.

Is this helpful?
