I have an eastport 205 and looking for recommendations sealing the deck plate above the gas tank. The sealant is starting to come apart in a few spots and I noticed more water in the bildge during rainy periods. Should I use 3M 5200? I assume that I have to remove the old sealant correct?

Thank you

Generally, 3-M 5200 is for more permanent applications and not recommended as a deck-to-hull sealant. 3-M 4200 would be a better choice. Another good product line is from Boatlife. The product to use for this application would be their Life-Seal silicone & polyurethane sealant. Boatlife also makes a line of caulk removal products as you will need to completely remove the old sealant.

I agree with T/A. BoatLife is my choice.

Did the trip go or the weather scare you away? Email me offline.

I just used Boat Life to seal mt deck plates, did a great job. I did have one tube spring a leak, I had a little bit of mess to clean up. I think it is a great product. I found it on sale at Iboats for 40% off.

Hi:
Appreciate the responses.
Phil I sent you an email yesterday. Maine was a great experience to you thanks to your guidance. Definitely a return trip is in order.

The marine adhesive sealant 3M5200 is a very strong adhesive. It is generally not used to bond together components which you might wish to separate later. I would use a sealant with less adhesive strength than 3M5200 to provide a flexible gasket seal between the removable section of the deck and the hull. At the joint between the deck and hull, you just need a sealant; an especially strong adhesive is not necessary.
