I have a 1968 13' AmFab Salem Skiff (looks much like a Whaler but of course I would rather have a Whaler... maybe someday).

The boat came with a 1972 Johnson 25 (approx. 85 lbs.) and pulley steering. I recently upgraded to a 1986 Johnson 40 (approx. 185 lbs.) with teleflex steering and I love this set up.

My only problem is weight distribution. The extra 100 lbs. in the back of the boat causes the boat to be a little "back heavy". I was considering either moving the battery towards the front of the boat or using sand bags to balance out the boat.

I'm sure others have had the same type problems with your boats. If you would care to share any experiences with me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance for your time.

Got a dog? Let him stand up on the bow like they love to do... that will fix your trim problem!

Anyway... relocate the battery forward if practical, never good idea to add more weight (sandbags, etc) to offset trim problems unless it absolutely necessary.
IIRC- one Jetski manufacturer was forced to retro-fit metal plates to the inner section of the bow area on one particular model to avoid a dangerous porpoising condition. Most owners didn't like "the fix" but it was unavoidable.

As a general rule, I find it's always preferable to relocate existing weight, rather than to add additional weight.

That said, there are a whole host of challenges that come with relocating batteries. Perhaps there is something else that can be relocated first?

Thanks for the responses. I like the set up the way it is now and when I have two people in the boat there is no problem. Next time I go out I'll be sure and bring all my fishing gear and put up front. I could also my my gas tank up front. One of those hydro-foils may help but I hear so many mixed reviews on them I really don't know what to think of them. Maybe I'll post some pictures of the boat on here when I get a chance.
