I have a 1987 Johnson 40 that has a leaking fuel pump. I want to replace the VRO fuel pump with a non-VRO fuel pump. Does someone have a OMC number for the non-VRO fuel pump? Also if there is anything else I need to do in this process please let me know.

The VRO unit is very old and the VRO fuel pump is very expensive. I have made my mind up that this is what I'm going to do so no need to discuss the pros and cons of VRO versus non-VRO on this post?

It is a easy conversion and a cheaper way to go than replacing the VRO. Just connect the in and out fuel lines to the standard fuel pump and you are good to go.

Part # is 0389338. It is about $100.

Here is a great resource for all OMC / BRP product part catalogs with exploded views of the assemblies.

The last I heard(about 8 months ago) was that the non-VRO pump is now the same or almost the same price as the VRO pump which is about $375. I would look for a used or new unit on E-Bay or boat shops. Now this was for V6 outboards, the same might not be true for 40's. My 1994 VRO I just disconnected it and plugged the oil line and unplugged the sender so it would stop beeping at me. You can do this if you find a cheap VRO pump but want to premix.

PS my bud has a couple 40's that are blown up, I will ask him if he has a good used pump.

Thanks Bigshot... let me know.
Also if they have a nice cowl hood for a good price I may be interested.

Just checked with our local OMC shop and the new non-VRO fuel pump cost just under $100. Ebay has a few of the new non-VRO pumps listed for around $50.

Buy a new one then. Like I said this was on a V6 so I guess the smaller hp is not bad. He has a couple cowls but for a navy Evinrude. My bud has a nice 50hp 1985 cowl for a johnson that would fit.

The 40/50 emblem may be replacable. See if you can get a price and picture of the hood. My hood is decent just has the fiberglass chipped badly in the corners. If I can find a replacement for a good cost I would consider purchasing it. Thanks.

Just in case anyone is using this for future reference... the correct fuel pump number I think is 0398338. I think Jeff just had a couple digits in the wrong order. Easy mistake to make.
