Topic: Newport rails on Montauk? (Classic)

Have a 1987 Montauk... love it (naturally). Have a forward casting platform for it (love that too for diving gear stowage). Want to keep "some" forward railings on the boat since without them the forward casting platform is pretty precarious. (Rear railings have beenremoved for diving), but I am tired of the "too tall" (for my use) forward rails on the Montauk. Does anyone know if Newport forward rails will fit, or does the wider liner of the Newport mean that the railings are too narrow for the more-open Montauk? The alternative is to bend up some custom rails that duplicate the Newport rails but at a wider stance (if needed). Ideas?

Dave- think the Newport rails will be too narrow. I can take some measurements for you later today when I go down to my Newport(Newtauk). |

Dave-I have a similar idea but would like to have a set of side rails made that would be a 'low rise' version of the stern rails. These would terminate at the second stanchion on either side. There is an outfit on fleabay that purports to make custom rails for whalers (Do a search there for 'Boston Whaler') I plan on contacting them next week and I'll let you know how I come out. Regards, Barney |

He is my report from an older thread on the side rails that I had custom made. Very happy with product and service.Past Post: "I received my custom grab rails via UPS today from Raymond Martin. He did a terrific job and delivered as promised. He made 2 rails 36" long and 6" high. He also included all the stainless hardware for through bolting to my Newport gunnel. I originally requested 30" rails , but Raymond suggested 36" and he was right on. Thanks Raymond! I reccommend his company for quality work." Thanks Guys... Appreciate any other news too from anyone. BarneyC, I'd appreciate an update when you talk to the guy. Maybe we can gwt a discount on 2 sets. I think that the vendor cited by Newtauk is the same guy I was talking to about a swim platform as well. I'll give him a jingle too. The idea of having side rails forward with a gap in the middle, IE: a low version of the aft rails is a good one. Ity would surely make anchor handling and from-the-beach boarding easier. Dave

You can always cut your rails down some. |

"You can always cut your rails down some." Let me mull that over a bit too...

Dave-I ordered my 'side rails' from Raymond Martin of Martin Marine Design, lunker@hargray.com. The price was $185 plus shipping, which I thought very reasonable. He said that they'd probably ship nest week. I'll let you know how they come out. Barney

Dave, Weeki Wachi Whaler, who posts here occasionally, has a pristine classic Montauk with shortened bow rails. The previous owner had them "dropped" probably 4", and they really look nice. It gives a slightly sleeker look to the boat as well as easing boarding. Although not certain, I imagine the cost to lower the rails would be modest. Jerry |

That may be a good solution, and I'm going to look at it.The one benefit of new rails is that I can have them made with no rail at all in the middle of the bow (IE: no rail between the two most forward mounting positions and the bow). This makes anchoring easier, and would really make boarding from the beach easier, while preserving some "grab rail" when up forward. Dave

The side rails are here and on! Martin Marine executed my idea perfectly - I was even able to use the original screw holes for the base plates. What a moon shot! Way to go Raymond! The workmanship was flawless and, as we say here in Texas, they're 'Bull Stout'!I took some pics but I don't know how to to post them but if you're interested, email me and I'll be glad to send them along.Barney |
