I have a 1984 25hp Merc on my little Whaler. This morning I discovered gasoline on the water while the engine was idleing. Smelled like it was coming from the pee-hole. I collected some water from it and noticed a heavy petroleum sheen on the cooling water. How can gas be coming into contact with the cooling water? Any advise on how to correct? Thanks.

There is no way for the water to come in contact with fuel before it goes out the pee hole (unless the water jackets are leaking). Could also be un-burnt oil. Probably from the motor not being warmed up all the way. Chances are the fuel in from un-burnt gas or oil going through the exhaust where it will meet up with the cooling water and then go out the ports and prop together. Older two strokes sometimes do this. Not a problem. But I would check to make sure fuel is not leaking under the cowling while it is running. If so the your motor might end up in orbit. |

After looking further, I discovered that the gas is coming out the bottom of the fuel bowl located underneath the carburetor. It looks like there are only two screws holding it in place so I'll take it apart tomorrow (Sat). Just can't figure why gasoline would be flowing out the bottom of the fuel bowl, and spurts out with each squeeze of the fuel line bulb. |

Well that is a major problem. You will need to remove the carb and fix whatever the problem is. If enough gas is leaking out it will get into the water where the water pump will suck it back in and through your engine. |

Some carbs have a drain located at the bottom of the bowl. If you are lucky, you can access the drain screw and tighten it up without removing the entire carb. Take a look. |

The float bowl is mounted to the carb by two screws. I see no other screw so I guess I'll remove the float bowl. Maybe the float itself is sticking. Would that cause the gas to come out the bottom of the bowl? My manual also shows a fuel inlet needle and spring. Maybe something is wrong with that? There is also a gasket between the float bowl and carb. Could this gasket be the cause? |
