Topic: Whaler 27 from Armstrong to Whaler Drive

I have a 1984 Whaler 27 that in 2003 I gutted. I replaced the transon, upgraded to Furuno, added a tower, added Rupp outriggers, replaced 225 hp 2 stroke Johnstons with 225 hp 4 stroke Yamahas replaced the Gill bracket with a oversized Armstrong bracket, replaced the 310 gallon fuel tanks with 330 gallon fuel tanks and fixed every thing. In short, blew too much money. My problem is water enters the scuppers when I'm loaded with 330 fuel in the floor, 50 gallons on fuel in a box on the deck, 1,100 qt cooler with 400 pounds of ice, 4 men, dive gear, 4 air tanks, the air compressor, fishing tackle and stuff. My solution is a bought a 1988 Whaler with a Whaler drive. I'm removeing it, the whaler drive, from the old and tied 1988 and replacing the Armstrong bracket on my 1984 the the Whaler drive. Before I start...any ideas, any suggestions. Should I "pop" a mold on the 1988 Whaler drive and make a new one? Should I transfer the "goodie" for the 1984 to the 1988? Is the transon on the 1988 still OK? HELP...

Wow, that is quite a project. First of all, which 1988 Whaler model is the Whaler Drive coming from? Is it a true whaler drive, and not a saltshaker? Assuming it is another 27, then its should be about 30-inches deep, and will fit your transom. Are you sure that the WD will solve your problem though? I assume your oversized Armstrong bracket has positive flotation, but will the WD bouyancy compensate for the increase weight of your boat? I believe the WD was designed to compensate for the increased weight of the WD and engine set back, and did not add any trim, negative or positive. |

Whaler wasn't using Saltshaker brackets in 1988. The Whaler Drive will provide more bouyancy than an Armstrong bracket. It will also provide more running surface. The trim tabs will be about 3 feet further back than where they are located on the Whaler 27 with Armstrong bracket. Good luck with the transplant. |

Captain, I once considered "poping the mold" for the Whaler drive. Would love to see/help with helpers if needed. I'am in the Houston area...Wharton is just down the road. Richard

A mold is a great idea. The boat is at my home, on a trailer. I've contacted Keith Doty at Southern Sportsman. He installed the Armstorng bracked for me in 2003 and did a great job. My time line to replace the Armstrong with the Whaler drive is January 2010. If you want to pop a mold contact him or me. Thanks for the request. |

I understand that the WD model starts out as a standard outboard model, and the transom gets filled in to make it a full transom. Has anyone ever converted one back to an outboard model? |

Hey Tom, what was the last year? Was the Saltshaker bracket an option or a replacement for the Whaler Drive? |

1990.When the new Whaler 27 Walkaround appeared in 1991, Whaler ditched the Whaler Drive and started using a bracket made by Saltshaker Marine. Unfortunately, and confusingly, they called this bracket "Whaler Drive". |

If done properly, I would think adding a Whaler-Drive to the 1984 Whaler 27 would add to the value. |

It was a great deal. I have taked my 1984 Whaler 27 with the Whaler Drive to the tuna ground and back. It was a needed upgrade and great plan. Costly, but great. |

Will the big Yamahas be able to tilt clear of the water on the Whaler Drive bracket? In my marina, I see a lot of big 4-strokes mounted on older hulls with brackets, and a lot of them have the gearcase hanging in the water because the larger cowling doesn't allow the motor to tilt clear. |

Possibly. I have about 9 inches of clearance between the top of my 225 Fichts and the transom of my Whaler 27 WD. The gearcases of my motors are above the water surface least 9 inches when tilted fully. I believe that the 27 Whaler Drive was able to hold the taller OMC V8s. Having said that, the cowling on the new Yamaha Offshore V6 motors are BIG. Probably as big as, if not bigger than, the OMC V8. They are definitely wider and can't be spaced as close together. |
