I was out running the 1975 Katama around today and the 1983 Suzuki 85hp started bogging down at medium and high RPM. The higher the RPM the faster it would bog down. We just had [1983 Suzuki 85hp] in the shop. They said [there was a problem with] the third coil, so they replaced it. Took out today and very similar [problem] still persists. So we squeezed the primer bulb [twice] and [the engine] was back up to speed for a bit. Ran for couple hours or so just squeezing [the primer bulb] when [the engine] would slow down. Could the fuel pump be sucking all of the fuel possible and there is a collapse in the line or obstruction somewhere like at the fuel tank switch? This happens on either tank. Or do you guys think the fuel pump (which looks like a mechanical pump) is giving me problems now?

We checked the filters, again, and all hoses have been replaced.

You can use the fuel hose primer bulb as an indicator to help diagnose fuel supply problems. When the engine slows down from lack of fuel when running at higher speeds, the fuel primer bulb would tend to be collapsed if there were an obstruction upstream that was limiting fuel flow. If the fuel primer bulb is not collapsed when the engine slows, the cause of the fuel restriction is probably the fuel pump.

Good morning Jim,

Thank you very much for your response. In searching around the site, I ran into your article on primers that was very informative also.

The bulb is not physically collapsed but is really soft. If I pump it, it is a little slow to recover shape. Sounds like from your response I should be looking at the fuel pump first.

Thanks,

Mike
