I have a 1988 20" outrage that i am currently running an early 1990's Mercury 200 Offshore ...... I am looking to re-power this boat and have the opertunity to purchase a 2004 250 Mercury Saltwater series ...... the question that I have is can the boat handle a motor of this size or is it too much? ........... the only reaso I am concidering this motor is that I can get a very good deal on it and it has less that 100 hours on it. I like the performance of the 200 and am not so worried about fuel ecconomy as much as I am the weight issue ..... the 250 weighs in at 477# and I beleive the motor I have on there now comes in around 405# ........ any advise that anyone has would be helpfull ........... thanks, Paul

To ascertain the additional weight, use 70 lbs of cinder blocks, bags of sand or ice, (whatever) and put them in the rear splashwell. You can then judge the hull's trim and sea keeping ability. |

How have you verified the hours on the engine? In my experience, any motor that is for sale will be described by the seller as having "less than 100 hours" on it, regardless of age or actual hours of use. |

A very close freind of mine purchased the moter in 2005 as a left over from 2004, the moter was installed on his boat .... he used it for 2 seasons (2006-2007) and than aquired another boat and had this boat and motor layed up for the past few years trying to have it painted ..... the boat never got painted and he knows that i am looking to repower ........ I personaly know the history of this motor or I would be skeptical of the hous as well |

The boat can handle the weight, which I think is closer to 500#, but that engine has a lot more power than the 200, and will use a lot more fuel. Boat could run close to 60 with it. Use an Enertia prop. |
