I've done lots of reading here and on other sites. I think I'm finally ready to replace the two brass drain tubes in my [1973 SPORT 13]. The lower tube doesn't look too bad, but the top tube is completely shot. I can see and feel holes in it, so I know water could be leaking through inside to the hull. Here's my problem: the motor, which is a late 1990's Mercury Classic 40, is actually covering about one-third of the top drain tube. I just noticed this and am not sure what to do, aside from pulling the motor off to do the job. Even then, I'm worried that the weight and force of the motor pushing on the rolled lip of the drain tube will cause some [problem] with the surrounding fiberglass. Then again, the area surrounding the current drain tube doesn't look too bad, so maybe I shouldn't worry about it. Has anyone else encountered a similar [situation]? If so, how did you deal with it? Thanks! -Matt

Matt -- The best thing to do is pull the motor off to install the new drain tube and then reinstall the motor one set of holes higher so it will not interfere with the drain tube.Your boat's performance may improve with the higher motor mounting height. |

Hi Tom - Thanks for the quick reply! I hadn't even thought about moving the motor up a hole or two on the transom - too obvious I guess. It's currently mounted as low as it can go, and it looks like moving up just one set of holes will provide the necessary clearance. Now I just need to find a couple of brutes to help me take it off. -Matt |

Due to the extreme curve of a 13's transom, my 40 is mounted ALL the way up and could go higher. |

Thanks Toshgib. What's the best way to determine the optimal position on the transom?-Matt |

Go all the way up and see how it runs. If it blows out, keep lowering it until you like it. Suzukis like to be run high but if I was you I would go 2nd to last and probably be good(up 2 holes). |
