Author Topic:   Outrage 18'- Under Gunnel Rod Holder Placement

Can someone give me the distance from the gutter to the bottom of the rod holders? Using a 15" long holder, I would have only 2" of clearance to the bottom of the holder, 3" to the bottom of the first hook. Most reels would hit the floor with this placement. I have fiberglass gunnels, and wonder if their bottoms are lower than the teak ones, and require a shorter rod holder, or is this the way they are?

It is the way that they are. I use the top hooks for rods/reels and the bottom hooks for my telescoping boat hook and boat brush. Once it's off the trailer and in the water, the rods go into the rodholders topsides (I have rocket launchers on the arch). I use bootstrap bungees (the mini ones) to secure the rods in the rocket launchers for heavy seas.

That is one of many reasons the 18' Outrage is no longer made.....

...though I wish the hull were still available. :)

Thanks, Dave, kind of what I figured, kind of minor compared to some other quirks, like the lower, center, transom drain being set at just above 10", the supposed draft of the boat. I have never seen an Outrage come close to floating that high, might happen with no engine, just oars. Still gotta love the boat.
