Hello. I recently bought Mercury part # 84-816626A24. I am trying to wire it to my 1997 50hp 4-stroke, and I can't seem to find a diagram. I don't have the plug on the motor end, it was hacked to convert to tiller steering. I am converting it back and need to know what wires the 8-pin plug correspond to.

any ideas?

Could you describe what this part is. I am not familiar with it by its part number.

It is a key switch harness w/horn.
It provides the wiring from motor to console and contains wires for, tilt/trim switch and gauge, alarms, ignition, (and hopefully tach?).

On the motor end is a 8-pin plug that and the pins are labeled 1 through 8. On my motor, there is no "jack" to plug this male plug into, so I will have to wire it up myself. I have no idea which wires the plug pins correspond to.

Since you have the harness and the motor before you, you should be able to identify what wires in the harness serve what function. Similarly, you should be able to identify what wires in the motor serve the same function. The interconnection would then be a matter of joining the two. As a guide to deduction of the function of the wire, in addition to its actual wiring (that you can see before you) you might also consider its wire insulation color. I suspect that a reasonable assumption could be made that the wire insulation color would be used in the same manner on both sides of the harness, that is, on the engine side and on the extension harness side.

If I may, I would ask you how you plan to connect these two harnesses. Are you going to re-install the missing connector from the motor? This would be my preferred method, as you would restore the motor to its original condition. Or, are you going to cut off the connector from the harness and spice the wires together?

To expand on my reply:

If, for example, there is a conductor in the harness with red insulation and a violet stripe, there is very likely also a conductor on the engine wiring (that was formerly connector to the mating connector) that has that same insulation. After carefully verifying these wires were indeed used for the same circuit, you could join them.

Since you mention that your motor has been unscrupulously modified by a previous owner, you should be very careful about simply resorting to published wiring diagrams for your interconnection. Once a hacker has gotten into the wiring, there is no telling what sort of strange modifications have been made. Carefully check all circuits before connecting them.

You may also find this reference article I wrote where I have collected information about the color codes used in various boats and motors to be of interest:

But, again, there is no way to be certain that the motor you have before you is wired according to any standard. If it has been modified, you need to be careful to explore all the wiring to determine what it is actually doing.

thanks for the response!

So I followed the wires that were connected to the tiller handle and discovered that they lead to an 8-pin jack! I ran my ignition bundle plug to the jack and everything seems to be working.

I still have questions about the tach, and kill switch wiring, but I will follow the mercury wiring code.
